About PRISM
PRISM (Partnership for Research Into Sentient Machines) is a registered charity working to build the field of digital minds research, preparing society for a future with conscious, or seemingly conscious, AI. We support and connect organisations working at the intersection of AI consciousness, moral status, and policy — actively fostering collaborations across the field.
About the Role
This is a broad, high-impact role for someone who wants to help build a nascent but increasingly important field from the ground up. You'll work directly with PRISM's leadership on a mix of field-building, outreach, content, and operations.
The digital minds field is moving fast. This role isn't just about executing a fixed plan — you'll be expected to spot emerging opportunities, propose new field-building initiatives, and adapt as the landscape shifts. You'll also work closely with partner organisations, including Cambridge Digital Minds (CDM), coordinating on joint projects and ensuring our efforts are well-aligned.
The role suits someone who is comfortable moving between strategic outreach and hands-on admin, cares deeply about getting the right people into important problems, and can write clearly for different audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Field Building & Stakeholder Engagement
Support with the development and maintenance of a "Getting Started in Digital Minds" resource — a dedicated website covering research agendas, key readings, open questions, career paths, and starter projects.
Manage and grow the Digital Minds Community Slack, including regular posting, curating discussions, and fostering connections between members.
Systematically identify individuals and organisations in AI policy, development and governance who could contribute to digital minds, providing them with tailored resources and potential project hooks.
Identify and maintain a database of early-career researchers and students interested in digital minds.
Develop and lead new field-building projects as opportunities arise — this is a fast-moving space, and we expect this role to grow with it.
Ensure PRISM's field-building efforts complement and amplify the work of partners rather than duplicating it.
Identify and cultivate new partnership opportunities as the field develops.
Communications and Events
Support the Exploring Machine Consciousness podcast, including hiring and coordinating with an external editor.
Produce or contribute to the PRISM Newsletter and the Digital Minds Newsletter.
Support production of content and marketing materials.
Support the logistics, communications and organisation of events, workshops and programmes.
Programmes and Operations
Provide general PRISM admin support, including finalising minutes from board meetings and supporting Charity Commission filings and compliance tasks.
Administrative and operational support for ongoing projects, including collaborative projects with Cambridge Digital Minds such as the Fellowship, Online Course or Strategy Workshop.

Closing Statement
We Welcome Diverse Perspectives
Understanding and governing potentially conscious AI systems will require insights from many disciplines, backgrounds, and perspectives. We're building a new field, and we need people who can think rigorously across boundaries. We particularly encourage applications from individuals currently underrepresented in AI and consciousness research.
If PRISM's mission resonates with you and you believe you can contribute meaningfully to this work, we encourage you to apply - even if your background doesn't match every qualification listed. Novel combinations of expertise, unconventional career paths, and fresh perspectives are valuable to us.
This is a rare opportunity to shape how humanity thinks about and prepares for one of the most profound questions we may face: what moral status and protections should we extend to potentially conscious machines? If you're ready to help us answer that question with intellectual rigor, strategic vision, and genuine care for getting it right, we'd love to hear from you.
