About PRISM

PRISM (Partnership for Research Into Sentient Machines) is a registered charity working to build the field of digital minds research, preparing society for a future with conscious, or seemingly conscious, AI. We support and connect organisations working at the intersection of AI consciousness, moral status, and policy — actively fostering collaborations across the field.

Role of the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of PRISM. Trustees are jointly responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction, and financial oversight of the charity. They ensure PRISM operates in accordance with its charitable objects, its legal obligations, and its values. Trustees act in the best interests of PRISM and its mission, not in the interests of the organisations they represent or the communities they come from.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring PRISM complies with its governing documents, charity law, and Charity Commission requirements

  • Contributing to the strategic direction of the charity and supporting the executive team through a period of organisational growth

  • Overseeing financial health, including reviewing budgets, accounts, and funding arrangements

  • Safeguarding the reputation and values of the organisation

  • Acting in the best interests of the charity at all times, exercising reasonable care and skill

Experience

Essential: one or more of the following:

  • Experience dealing with the UK Charity Commission and charity regulatory requirements

  • Experience in a management or leadership role at a UK-based non-profit

  • Financial or accounting experience (e.g. financial oversight, budgeting, audit, or treasury experience in a charity or comparable context)

  • Charity governance or legal expertise

Desirable but not essential:

  • Knowledge of and experience working within the effective altruism (EA) landscape

  • Established networks in AI Safety, AI governance, or Policy Think Tanks.

What we're looking for

Above all, we need someone diligent, a person who takes governance seriously, asks the right questions, and follows through. You don't need a background in AI or philosophy of mind, though an interest in the space is welcome. We value clarity, good judgement, and a willingness to engage constructively with a small team doing ambitious work.
